A premier social organisation of Assamese people residing in, and coming to, Delhi- along with the well wishers of Assam - The Assam Association has been instrumental in dealing with numerous aspects and issues related to the Assamese society since its existence in 1947. Among other things, the association has the following objectives: to provide a forum for the people from Assam in Delhi in regard to social and cultural contacts; to organise and hold various social and cultural functions and traditionally important festivals; to establish a cultural centre for imparting training in Assamese arts, dances and dramas.

So far, it is the only newspaper from the Northeast to have a presence on the Web. The site itself is rather simple to navigate through. There are not too many departments or any cyber pyrotechnics. The site is religiously updated everyday and remains the best place to look for Northeast news.

The official website of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) is comprehensive. The quantity of material is, simply put, quite exhaustive. The site is updated regularly and is quite visitor-friendly. The design-layout may not be very professional, but it makes up with its information. The NSCN, in fact, was the first insurgent outfit to realise the potential and the potency of the Internet and put up its official site.

The North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited (NEDFi) aims to be "a dynamic and responsive organization to catalyze the economic development of the Northeast". The NEDFi assists entrepreneurs in the formation of fixed assets by identifying, financing and nurturing eco-friendly and commercially viable industrial and infrastructure projects in the region. NEDFi's prime role is to enhance the region's wealth and prosperity of its people. In short, it is the development bank of the Northeast for the Northeast.

The official website of the Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) of Manipur looks elegant and is one of the best designed sites on the Northeast. The quantity of material is, simply put, quite exhaustive. The site is updated, now quite regularly, and is quite visitor-friendly. The design-layout, which is sufficiently attractive, makes up for what it might lack in substantial information about Manipur.

The Save Majuli website is a paltform of the Majuli Island Protection and Development Council, based in South Avenue, New Delhi. The site provides a lot of informaiton on the endangered riverine island, as well as a host of related links. Unfortunately, the site does not seem to have been visited enough.

The home page of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is rather disorganised. Neither does it have much information. On these two counts it lacks far behind the appealing interface of the RPF site as well as the exhaustiveness of the NSCN home page. Its main drawback is that it does not provide an interactive platform -- there are not email addresses to which one can write to the organisation.

Xophura is, as the blurb on the site says, still in a nascent state with the actual effort having been started only in early 1999. It is a joint effort of two young software engineers currently based in New Delhi. Xophura is a pariseworthy endeavour to preserve Assamese books, books on Assam, audio-video clippings on Assam and of Assamese cultural and historical events in electronic form. These will be made available in the web in order to promote this heritage to the world.
